ABILENE, Texas – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has installed the latest checkpoint screening technology at Abilene Regional Airport (ABI).
Advanced imaging technology (AIT) safely screens passengers for metallic and nonmetallic threats including weapons, explosives and other objects concealed under layers of clothing without physical contact. The state-of-the-art unit deployed to ABI is a second generation machine with a smaller footprint, known as the AIT-2. All AIT units have automated target recognition software, designed to enhance privacy by using the same generic outline for all passengers.
“TSA’s job is to keep passengers safe, and the use of advanced imaging technology is another tool to help us detect current and evolving threats,” said TSA’s Federal Security Director Amy Williams. “The use of this technology also streamlines the screening process, which is an added bonus for travelers.”
City of Abilene’s Director of Transportations Services Don Green believes this is an important addition to airport security. “Detecting potential threats to airline passenger safety and security is vital,” he said. “Abilene Regional Airport is fortunate to have local and regional TSA partners dedicated to that task. Having the latest passenger screening technology deployed here adds another layer of security that assists TSA in preventing prohibited items from getting onto an airline aircraft.”
Advanced imaging technology is equipped with millimeter wave technology, which uses harmless electromagnetic waves to perform a single scan. The technology meets all known national and international health and safety standards. In fact, these waves emit 10,000 times less energy than a cell phone call.
